It had been a while since I last saw Ayden Sng, and he had visibly slimmed down. He stands 183cm tall and weighs 68kg — by my reckoning, that puts his Body Mass Index (BMI) at around 20.6, which for a man is on the lean side, with a low level of body fat.
When I ask whether the demands of filming have worn him down, he laughs: “Actually, my weight has always hovered around 70kg. The prevailing aesthetic in China leans towards a lean, ‘lithe’ build rather than a bulky one, and since I’m in the middle of a shoot, I’ve trained myself a little slimmer.” He has cut back on carbohydrates and stepped up his cardio, all so that he looks his best on camera.
Maintaining his figure is deliberate, but so too is the round-the-clock grind of shooting. His 32nd birthday fell on 17 November, and that day he was on set in Nantong, China, filming from 5am straight through to 2am the next morning. During a break, the crew suddenly rushed out bearing a cake and flowers and broke into “Happy Birthday.” He admits to being intensely shy, and unused to being fêted by so large a crowd, he felt rather awkward. “It was so embarrassing — really ‘pai seh’.” Then everyone tucked into the cake; he took a token bite, and just half an hour later, it was back to work.
No Line Between Work and Life, Growing Through the Job
Asked about his birthday wish, Ayden answers crisply and without hesitation: “I hope my schedule stays packed with work.” When I press him to share a more personal wish, he replies: “For me, there isn’t much of a line between work and private life. Right now, in both Singapore and China, the entertainment industry has slid into a bleak winter — production budgets are being slashed everywhere, and it’s getting harder and harder to be an actor. So if my calendar can be full next year, that’s a good thing.”
Being an actor in Singapore, he says, is a bit like holding a nine-to-five: once a shoot wraps or an event ends, you can go home and rest. But in the year-odd since he moved to China to grow his career, his life has been almost entirely consumed by work — the film crew is his only company, and even his emotional highs and lows are bound up with the job. Yet he revels in it. “Work makes me feel my life is full, that I’m making progress and learning new things — growing a little every day. Between takes I study the guqin and the pipa, and I even take Chinese lessons. One day, all these skills might come in handy on set.”
Shooting abroad, he is often cocooned in a closed-off environment, so once filming ends he always makes a point of heading out to walk the streets and feel the pulse of the city. “An actor has to remember to actually live life — that’s the only way to act better.”
Deeply Introverted, Happiest When Working
Ayden recently filmed the interactive reality series Smile Store No. 1, in which he and 34 other men from all walks of life opened bricks-and-mortar cafés across four cities — Harbin, Chongqing, Hengdian and Shenzhen — running them for three months and developing more than 50 products inspired by local culture, all to experience the challenges and thrills of starting a business.
He and a few of the other men ran the café in Harbin, where fans streamed in every day. Even though it was for a show, the work was anything but easy — cleaning, stocktaking, prepping ingredients, baking cakes, mixing drinks, hard at it until the early hours. “It was really fulfilling. For one, I picked up a new skill — baking — and I got the chance to open a café, which is a dream for a lot of young Singaporeans.”
If another reality-show opportunity comes along, Ayden says the “roll-up-your-sleeves” kind suits him best. “My nature is to say little and do a lot. I’m not good at being funny, I can’t giggle and clown around to warm up a crowd, and I’m a total ‘big I’ — deeply introverted, with no craving for the spotlight. Variety shows just aren’t for me.”
He explains that the MBTI (Myers–Briggs Type Indicator, a popular personality-typing tool) is all the rage in China right now: on first meeting, people ask whether you’re an “I” or an “E” — that is, an Introvert or an Extrovert — before they even get to your star sign. “In private I’m absolutely an ‘I’, but at work I can switch between ‘I’ and ‘E’.”他解释,中国现在很流行MBTI(Myers–Briggs Type Indicator,一种常见的性格类型分析工具),初次见面会问对方是I 人和或E 人,也就是Introvert(内向)或外向(Extrovert),跟着才问星座。”
Filming, Always Tinged with Regret
Ayden returns to Singapore once a month, usually landing at dawn, cramming all his commitments into a single intensive day, dropping in on his beloved cats at home, and then flying back to China to resume filming. On his late-November trip home, he packed 18 hours with events and shoots — including this eighth-anniversary cover story for MU/SE. Ever on the move: that has been the watchword of his life for the past year and more.
In 2025 alone, he shuttled between Singapore and China at least 20 times, spending well over S$10,000 on airfares — enough to make him wince. Because his schedule is so hard to pin down in advance, he often finds himself hastily booking flights online just days before departure; once he even misread the date and booked a ticket for the following year, nearly stranding himself abroad.2025 年,他往返新中两地至少 有20 次,花在机票的钱应该有万多新元,让他直呼心痛。
After shooting two period dramas back to back in China, he is currently filming a contemporary series. “No wig to wear, so I get to look sharp every day. The story spans ten years, and I play the character from older back to younger — it feels like reliving my secondary-school and university days. It’s a real test of your acting.”
This modern series is heavy on emotional scenes, giving actors plenty of room to stretch themselves. The catch is that, filming a full 20 hours a day, he has to switch emotions at a moment’s notice — cry on cue when told to — until he feels almost like a robot. He sighs: “Making a drama series is work full of regret; the external conditions simply don’t allow an actor the time to slowly inhabit a role. With a film, you might shoot only two or three scenes a day, and 90 minutes of footage can take a month; a series shoots 12 episodes in a month, so all an actor can do is give the best possible performance within those limits — and inevitably, some regrets linger.”
A White Christmas, Just for Himself
Having previously appeared in the local film Seven Days, he remains full of hope for the big screen; one of his New Year resolutions is to work with a Singaporean film director in 2026.
“And there’s one more thing — I suddenly have a real longing for a white Christmas.” Well, well — the workaholic has finally let slip a private wish. Still, he always locks in his plans at the last minute, booking flights only days before he leaves, so the destination and dates remain, for now, an unknown.“还有,我突然很想过一个白色圣诞。”
Whether this white-Christmas dream comes true will depend on whether the mood strikes him on the eve of the holidays. After a whole year on the move, here’s hoping Ayden can, before the year is out, carve out some beautiful memories of his own in a land of snow.
